Traditional craftsmanship has an important role to play in today's landscapes. At Hillside Conservation, we combine heritage rural skills with ecological landscape design to create places that are not only beautiful and enduring, but also support biodiversity and strengthen the natural environment.
Working alongside experienced ecological designers, land managers and conservation professionals, we deliver projects ranging from dry stone walling and stone-faced banks to native hedgerow establishment, hedge laying, habitat creation and bespoke structural landscape features.
Every project is designed to work with the landscape, using natural materials and traditional techniques that have stood the test of time.
Our work is guided by the principle that landscapes should be functional as well as attractive. Dry stone walls become wildlife habitat, banks stabilise slopes while creating ecological niches, and carefully planned planting helps restore biodiversity and reconnect fragmented habitats. Whether working on private estates, public spaces, rewilding projects or contemporary landscape schemes, we aim to create lasting features that become an integral part of the landscape rather than simply occupying it.
We also supply Morte Stone, a distinctive metamorphic slate from the heart of Exmoor. With its rich copper and burgundy tones, exceptional durability and versatility, it is suitable for both traditional conservation work and contemporary landscape design. Following the reopening of this historic quarry, the stone is once again available for projects seeking a locally sourced material with outstanding ecological and aesthetic credentials. Morte Stone was featured in the Gold Medal and Best in Show winning Rewilding Britain Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2022.
